The DRILL is a research laboratory dedicated to fundamental investigations in the luminescence properties of earth materials, and to the application of luminescence dating techniques to geomorphological, geological, and archeological problems. The DRILL welcomes collaboration with research institute and university faculty, consultants, and government agency researchers.

The DRILL research staff can collaborate on proposals, contribute to grant writing, and consult on study design. We can also arrange training for undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, and visiting researchers. What is Luminescence Dating? Luminescence dating typically refers to a suite of radiometric geologic dating techniques whereby the time elapsed since the last exposure of some silicate minerals to light or heat can be measured.

When dosed minerals are then re-exposed to light or heat, they release the stored electrons, emitting a photon of light that is referred to as luminescence. The electron may become trapped at a defect site T1, T2 etc for some time Storage. When the crystal is stimulated by light or heat, the electrons in the traps are evicted into the conduction band Eviction. From there, they can recombine with holes at the luminescence centers L , resulting in the emission of a photon of light — the luminescence signal that is observed in the laboratory.

Sainty A sequel to the classic text Thermoluminescence Dating by the same author, An Introduction to Optical Dating follows very much the same format as its predecessor. Indeed the continuation of style is, for me at least, the most disappointing element of his volume in as much as it again utilises the addition of a ‘Technical notes’ section at the end of each chapter. This is a style that can be frustrating, continuity of reading being disrupted by having to move to and from appropriate technical notes whilst part way through a chapter.

A more ‘readable’ style would have been insertion of sidebars alongside appropriate passages in the text. Notwithstanding this criticism, however, the book is destined to be an important text to any practitioner of luminescence dating. Optical dating is a fairly recent innovation Huntley, et al.

Over the last 60 years, luminescence dating has developed into a robust chronometer for applications in earth sciences and archaeology. The technique is particularly useful for dating materials ranging in age from a few decades to around ,—, years. In this chapter, following a brief outline of the historical development of the dating method, basic principles behind the technique are discussed.

This is followed by a look at measurement equipment that is employed in determining age and its operation.

Luminescence dating

Luminescence dating methods are able to provide ages for a variety of sedimentary deposits as they determine the time since the mineral grains were last exposed to light. Thermoluminescence TL and optically stimulated luminescence OSL measurements can be applied to quartz and feldspar grains in the laboratory but a way of analysing samples in the field would be invaluable in determining sampling strategy.

This proposal aims to develop such field equipment based on the infrared stimulated liminescence IRSL from feldspars. Fundamental laboratory studies would be carried out on mineral separates from a variety of sediments whose age is known and the measurement procedure would be tested on sediment cores brought back to the laboratory.

Department of Geography, Tokyo Metropolitan University. The dose estimation method of optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating has improved greatly over the last few years, and has been increasingly used in dating various Quaternary sediments. However, the age range of OSL dating using quartz, determined both by the saturation dose and the dose rate, makes its applicability limited only up to about ka. This paper reviews the various ongoing researches, which aims to extend the age range of luminescence dating, using quartz isothermal thermoluminescence ITL , quartz red TL, feldspar blue OSL with fading correction, and feldspar red OSL.

In addition, the luminescence properties of quartz have been found to depend on its host rock type and environment after denudation. Fast and medium OSL components of quartz, which are most suitable for dating, are not always available from sediments, which have been recently denudated and transported short distance. OSL of volcanic quartz gives age underestimation, because of the anomalous fading. Possible solutions for dealing with these problematic samples are suggested.

Luminescence dating of quaternary sediments: recent advances

The Luminescence Dating and Dosimetry Laboratory is developing new techniques for application to the dating of artefacts and deposits from sites that range widely in terms of chronological period, geographic location and material type. Recent work as focused on optically stimulated luminescence OSL techniques, in particular a novel experimental approach to the measurement of single grain OSL. A study produced, for the first time, absolute dates for a range of brick stupas located within the hinterland of Anuradhapura , contributing to the further development of a brick monument chronology for the region.

Ongoing work is examining whether unfired clay bricks from various sites can be dated accurately. OSL techniques are being applied to date sediment sequences in stratigraphic contexts associated with irrigation systems.

Luminescence dating is a geochronological tool used to determine the timing of sediment burial, pottery firing, mountain evolution, mineral formation and the exertion of pressure. The luminescence dating technique covers a large age range from modern-day to millions of years. The technique is inherently holistic, drawing upon understanding from disciplines such as physics quantum mechanics , mineralogy grain structure and composition , geochemistry natural radioactivity , archaeology and Earth sciences.
